Details
In the aftermath of World War II, Denmark is tasked with the immense challenge of defusing and removing 2.2 million landmines scattered along its West Coast. Sergeant Carl Rasmussen, a battle-hardened veteran, is assigned the dangerous mission by Lieutenant Ebbe Jensen.
To complete this daunting task, Carl is given a group of teenage German prisoners of war, with the promise that once the job is done, they will be released and allowed to return to their homeland. Initially met with hostility, Carl soon realizes that these boys are just young soldiers caught up in the war. He begins to develop a friendship with them and sees their potential for rehabilitation and a chance at a better life.
However, tragedy strikes when a mine explodes and kills Carl's loyal dog. This devastating event not only affects him personally but also serves as a turning point in his relationship with the prisoners. As they continue to work together, Carl begins to value their lives and safety, and questions the morality of forcing them into such a perilous situation.
