On the planet Krypton, a scientist named Jor-El sends his infant son, Kal-El, to Earth in a small spaceship before the planet is destroyed. The spaceship lands in Smallville, Kansas, and is discovered by Jonathan and Martha Kent, who raise the child as their son, Clark. As Clark grows up, he realizes he has superhuman abilities due to Earth's lower gravity and yellow sun. He keeps his powers hidden while working as a journalist for the Daily Planet in the city of Metropolis.
