Janne has just spent a year in jail and dreams of a career as a pianist. He falls in love with young songwriter Britt, but her father does everything to ruin their relationship.

1930 and times are bad. When Ulla and Gunnar also get notice the future doesn't look bright. Besides that Ulla discover that she's pregnant. Gunnar gets a job thought so now they can get married. But the outbreak of the war 1939 puts both of their patience severely to the test. Gunnar gets called up for military service and the future is uncertain.
