In the heartwarming film Smitty, thirteen-year-old troublemaker Ben finds himself at a crossroads after his misbehavior pushes his single mother, who is struggling to make ends meet, over the edge. Faced with the choice of going to juvenile hall or spending the summer on his estranged grandfather's Iowa farm, Ben begrudgingly agrees to the latter.
Upon arriving at the farm, Ben immediately feels out of place and longs to return to his familiar city life. However, his grandfather, Jack, is determined to help him turn his life around. In an effort to keep Ben occupied and teach him responsibility, Jack surprises him with a smart farm dog from an animal shelter.
