Mary and Max is a heartwarming animated film set in the mid-1970s. It tells the tale of Mary Dinkle, a lonely and socially awkward 8-year-old girl from Australia. In a desperate attempt to find a friend, Mary randomly chooses a name from a Manhattan phone book and sends a letter, accompanied by a chocolate bar, to a man named Max Horowitz.
Max is an overweight man living in New York who has Asperger's syndrome. Surprisingly, he responds to Mary's letter and sends her a chocolate bar in return. This exchange marks the beginning of a 20-year correspondence between the two unlikely pen pals.
Throughout the years, Mary and Max navigate their own personal challenges. Mary grapples with an alcoholic mother, a distant father, and the loss of loved ones, while Max deals with his weight issues and tries to control his Asperger's symptoms. Despite miscommunications and obstacles, their friendship grows stronger.
As time passes, Mary falls in love with a neighbor and saves money to have a birthmark removed, while Max manages to secure his dream job. The film poses the question, will these two friends ever meet face to face?
