Details
Agora is a historical drama set in Alexandria, Egypt in 391 AD. The movie revolves around the life of Hypatia, a renowned teacher of astronomy, mathematics, and philosophy. Hypatia's teachings and ideas are admired by her students, including Orestes, the city's prefect, and her personal slave, Davus.
However, as the Christian community gains political power led by Ammonius and Cyril, the institutions of learning and ideals of freedom are threatened. The Christians begin to enforce their beliefs, targeting the Jews and nonbelievers. Hypatia, who has no interest in faith, becomes a target in this religious conflict.
The movie jumps ahead 20 years to depict the ongoing tension between the Christians and non-Christians in the city. Orestes, now the prefect of Alexandria, tries to maintain peace but faces resistance from the zealous Christians. Hypatia, dedicated to her studies and the pursuit of truth, finds herself embroiled in the escalating conflict.
Agora explores themes of religion, knowledge, and power. It highlights the struggle between intellectual freedom and religious dogma, with Hypatia as a symbol of enlightenment in a time of darkness. The movie is a thought-provoking and visually stunning exploration of a pivotal moment in human history.
